Genstruct Research Provides Valuable Drug Toxicity Insight for Major Pharmaceutical Company

Causal Network Modeling Predicts the Risk of Idiosyncratic DILI and Hemangiosarcoma in Animal Models

Cambridge, Mass. — April 27, 2009 — ( Bio-IT World Conference & Expo '09)
Genstruct Inc., a systems biology company focused on identifying molecular mechanisms, networks and biomarkers to better develop novel therapeutics, molecular diagnostics and patient-specific therapies, today announced that its co-founder, president and CEO, Keith O. Elliston, Ph.D., will be presenting on the “Modeling Toxicity Data” track at the Bio-IT World Conference & Expo ‘09 being held in Boston, Mass. on April 27-29, 2009.

“Our Causal Network Modeling (CNM) platform is enabling us to team with major pharmaceutical leaders and quickly uncover truly valuable insights into drug toxicity and provide them with a framework for critical decisions on drug safety and marketability,” said Dr. Elliston. “Using this insilico approach, we collaborated with one of our pharmaceutical partners to identify the molecular mechanisms underlying idiosyncratic drug-induced liver injury (DILI) and drug-induced hemangiosarcoma formation in animals. With idiosyncratic DILI being a major cause for drug withdrawals from the market and drug-induced hemangiosarcoma in mice often preventing a drug from further development, our CNM platform is serving as a risk assessment tool for pharmaceutical companies during the pre-clinical stages.”

Dr. Elliston’s presentation titled “Causal Network Modeling in Drug Toxicity: Predicting the Risk of Idiosyncratic DILI and Hemangiosarcoma in Animal Models” will be held at 4:45 p.m. on Tuesday, April 28. The session will focus on how Genstruct and one of the industry’s leading pharmaceutical companies elucidated the molecular mechanisms underlying two different types of drug toxicities in preclinical animal models. First, Dr. Elliston will discuss how conserved mechanisms underlying idiosyncratic DILI were identified in asymptomatic rats, resulting in a key step in the development of a much-needed, pre-clinical predictive platform for idiosyncratic DILI that can be used in pre-clinical screening tests for drug toxicity. Then, Dr. Elliston will explain how the mechanisms underlying hemangiosarcoma, another type of drug-induced toxicity, were identified in mice, enabling the assessment of the relative risk to human from such drugs and facilitating key decisions in the drug development process.
